Naomi Nikola’s World - The Visionary Behind Omi Omi

Welcome to the headspace of Naomi Nikola, the visionary behind Omi Omi.
Known for her unique style that blends sweet “kawaii” and edgy subculture (sabukaru) elements, Naomi Nikola has been an influential figure in the online world of fashion for over 10 years. In 2023, Naomi officially launched her brand Omi Omi, the evolving culmination of her years of creativity and work. As the director and designer of the brand, she went on to release many iconic pieces and styles, curating a unique brand that catered to the “romantic rebels” - individuals who might be a little odd and have difficulty fitting in to the norm, but nevertheless seek to express themselves fully and unapologetically.
Today, we’re visiting Naomi in her own home. As I enter, I’m immediately taken by the personality and charm of the space. The walls feature many posters and pictures, some of shows and media that have inspired Naomi, and some of her own events and designs. The shelves are dotted with collectible figurines here or there, and purikura and other memorabilia are speckled across her room like scattered glitter. Naomi’s deep love of fashion can easily be seen by her lovingly curated collection of clothes and accessories - and no matter where you look, you’ll quickly come across original designs and samples from Omi Omi.
Behind the internet icon, Naomi comes across as a driven and determined person. Despite her self-admittedly shy personality, her individualistic style and bold designs tell a story of strength. While her creations do bring together her multicultural roots and otaku / “kawaii” culture, they go beyond just that - the finishing touch is most definitely her own passion and love for fashion.
In this interview, get to know more about Naomi, her story as a designer, her brand Omi Omi, and her plans for Omi Omi this coming year.
Q: Hi Naomi! Could you share a little bit about yourself?
A: Hello! My name is Naomi Nikola, and I’m a Filipina fashion designer, model, and creative based in Tokyo. I’m the founder of my fashion brand “Omi Omi,” where I create pieces inspired by strange cuteness. I’ve always loved storytelling through fashion, especially because I’m naturally quite shy, so creating has always been my way of communicating.
Q: How would you describe your sense of style?
A: I would describe my style as dreamy, eerie, and expressive. I love mixing “cute” with something unsettling or unexpected. It’s heavily inspired by fantasy, nostalgia, and my favorite heroines.
Q: What kind of brand is Omi Omi?
A: Omi Omi is a fashion and lifestyle brand made for the romantic rebels. It blends sweetness with intensity and softness with defiance. At its core, it’s about self expression, storytelling, and creating a space where anyone, regardless of gender, size, or background, can feel seen and free to be themselves.
Q: What’s in store for Omi Omi this year? What are you most excited for?
A: This year, I’m focusing on expanding Omi Omi through more fashion events and collaborations. I’m especially excited to push storytelling further and create more immersive collections that feel like full worlds. I also want to continue growing internationally and connecting with more people in person.
Q: Bringing it back to your space, I love your home! Is there a particular style or way that you decorate and design your space?
A: Thank you! My space is very personal and sentimental. I like to surround myself with things that feel nostalgic and magical, like trinkets, lace, vintage pieces, and objects that hold memories. My room feels like my safe haven and a part of myself, where everything I place has its own story. It’s almost like building a physical version of the world inside my head.
Q: What’s your favourite thing about your place?
A: My favorite thing is how safe and comforting it feels. It’s like my own little world where I can fully be myself, create freely, and recharge. My room is my safe haven and a part of who I am, where everything has a story behind it, which makes it feel very intimate and special to me.
Q: What are your favourite ways to unwind and enjoy your free time?
I mainly love being indoors and playing video games. I also enjoy tea parties, cute cafes, and raving. It really depends on my mood.
Q: If you had to give one piece of advice as a designer and brand owner, what would it be?
A: Don’t wait for permission to create what you want to see! Even if it feels small or imperfect at first, just start. Your voice and perspective are what make your work special, so trust that and keep going.
